Two other officers were wounded, with one in critical condition and the other recovering from a gunshot graze. The suspect who was killed, later identified as Jaylen Lobley, was not originally named by the authorities.
The incident unfolded in Southwest Memphis on Hewlett Road and Horn Lake Road, where officers responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue. Upon approaching the vehicle, a suspect inside opened fire on the officers, prompting them to return fire. The vehicle fled the scene but was later found on Hewlett Road. One suspect was apprehended immediately, while another fled but was eventually located nearby.
Memphis Police revealed that the stolen vehicle used during the shooting was connected to criminal activities involving the 18-year-old suspect. In March, he had been arrested with an illegal, modified semi-automatic weapon equipped with a Glock switch that allowed for fully automatic fire. Despite facing charges related to stolen vehicles and car theft devices, he had been released without bond.
Memphis officials expressed deep concern over the escalation of gun violence in the city, with Mayor Paul Young calling for urgent community action to address the issue. The current wave of violence in Memphis has seen the number of homicides climbing steadily, with 101 recorded as of Tuesday, just shy of the same period in the previous year. Last year alone, Memphis witnessed a total of 399 homicides, marking the third record-breaking year out of four.
The District Attorney and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have been called in to conduct a thorough investigation into the tragic events of Friday morning. Interim Police Chief C.J.
