What is the cost of hospitality? Under normal circumstances, it is given warmly and freely. However, it is not always the case with immigrants. More often than not, they find themselves in tricky situations due to harsh treatment from the local communities.
This murky relationship has been witnessed since time immemorial. The natives completely overlook the rights of the migrants and go-ahead to abuse them and make them feel inferior in every aspect.
Luckily, among this obnoxious lot are hearts filled with care and compassion. Their guts rumble having to stomach these injustices, and as a result, the few just individuals have taken matters into their own hands and joined the battle to fight for these immigrants. A good example is Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin who established the reputable Frontera Fund.
The Frontera Fund came about as a result of two incredibly courageous human rights activists, Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin. Having been in the media industry for a considerable period, they were at the time serving as media executives at Village Voice Media.
They had witnessed too many cases of racial discrimination that they decided to blow the whistle on the issue. Unfortunately, their actions did not augur well with those responsible, and a reaction to their actions ensued immediately. While at their Phoenix home enjoying the evening breeze after a tough day in the office, both Lacey and Larkin received unwarranted visitors. The Selective Enforcement Unit from Maricopa flooded their compound with suspicious vehicles. In utter dismay, the duo just looked on with wonder. What do they want? Have we committed any wrongs? Well, the questions did not add up, and in a split second, they were in cuffs and were being hurled into the tinted-windowed vehicles.
It was crystal clear that they were being arrested. What had the world come to be? Instead of being commended for exposing the ills of the society, they were in the weird cars and cuffs? In an effort to earn the freedom of others, they had lost their own.
They had published that Arpaio, the state sheriff, was heading those that perpetrated evils in Arizona, ranging from anti-Mexican fear-mongering and political posturing to financial irregularities and mismanagement. Moreover, it uncovered the power abuse experienced down at the sheriff’s office.
The lives of Lacey and Larkin were in grave danger. They were going to pay for being stand-up citizens of the state of Arizona. Fortunately, the public learned of their arrest, and they refused just to sit back and watch. They went to the streets and demanded their release. Within 24hours, the duo was freed and was ready to take the battle to the next level.
The events of this fateful day progressed to court. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin complained of their wrongful and unconstitutional arrest. The case was judged in their favor, and they received a settlement of $3.7 million, which enabled the founding of the Frontera Fund Foundation.
The Fund came to force with the aim of fighting for the Hispanic community in Arizona whose stay was characterized by racism and civil rights abuse. Having grown in the state, Lacey and Larkin had developed compassion for this community, and they were ready to fight the forces working against them.
In reaction to these inhumane actions, many groups have sprung up to fight for the human rights of those that are looked down upon in the society. In California, for instance, the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights has stood its ground to fight for families and individuals living in a foreign land. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund
The groups work to build a society that favors all even the immigrants without discrimination. Moreover, in San Francisco, the Amazon Watch together with other indigenous groups also work to safeguard the rights of both foreigners and the natives.
