Mint Hill, North Carolina — Federal authorities have arrested an 18-year-old who allegedly plotted a mass attack inspired by ISIS on New Year’s Eve, aiming to strike locations frequented by holiday shoppers, officials announced on Friday.
Christian Sturdivant was taken into custody on December 31 as he prepared to execute his plans at a Burger King and nearby grocery store in Mint Hill, a suburb just outside of Charlotte. The FBI characterized these intentions as a significant threat, indicating Sturdivant had been under surveillance since 2022, but the crucial investigation unfolded over the two weeks preceding the holiday.
“Sturdivant had clear intentions for violence,” said James Barnacle, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Charlotte division. The young man reportedly planned to use hammers and knives, which were discovered hidden in his bedroom.
The investigation began to intensify when Sturdivant initiated online communications with an individual he believed was associated with ISIS. This person turned out to be an undercover agent with the New York Police Department. Subsequently, he also engaged with a second undercover officer from the FBI, revealing the scope of his intentions.
According to U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson, these communications began around December 12. As the situation developed rapidly, law enforcement officials felt compelled to act swiftly to prevent potential violence that Sturdivant had purportedly been planning for about a year.
“Americans should be able to celebrate holidays without fear for their safety,” Ferguson remarked, emphasizing the urgency of the response from law enforcement. He commended the dedication of agents who worked over the festive period to ensure public safety.
In light of his charges, Sturdivant faces the possibility of up to 20 years in federal prison for attempted material support of a foreign terrorist organization if convicted. The collaboration among local and federal law enforcement has been praised as crucial in stopping such a dangerous plot.
“Thanks to the tireless efforts of our law enforcement partners, a potentially horrific attack was averted,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. She reaffirmed the Department of Justice’s commitment to targeting individuals aligned with groups like ISIS who plot violence against American citizens.
FBI Director Kash Patel added that Sturdivant reportedly aspired to join ISIS and become an operative for the group. His thwarted plans are seen as a troubling reminder of the ongoing threat posed by domestic terror-related conspiracies.
