Indianapolis, Ind. — Villanova surged in the second half to secure an 85-67 win over Butler on Saturday, marking their fifth consecutive victory. Bryce Lindsay led the Wildcats with 18 points as they overcame a three-point halftime deficit to dominate the second half.
Villanova, now 12-2 overall and 3-0 in Big East play, struggled through the first half, trailing 33-30 at the break. However, the Wildcats turned up the heat in the second half, shooting an impressive 70.4 percent and scoring 55 points.
Matt Hodge contributed significantly, scoring 17 points, while Duke Brennan added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Acaden Lewis rounded out a strong performance for Villanova, with 12 points, six assists, five rebounds, and five steals.
Butler, now 10-5 and 1-3 in the conference, was paced by Finley Bizjack, who also scored 18 points. Michael Ajayi recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the Bulldogs struggled offensively, shooting just 38.1 percent from the field and managing only six three-pointers on 27 attempts.
The game shifted momentum quickly after halftime. The Wildcats quickly seized control, as Tyler Perkins and Brennan knocked down layups, followed by 3-pointers from Lindsay and Hodge. This offensive outburst allowed Villanova to take a 40-33 lead just three minutes into the half.
As the game progressed, Lindsay demonstrated his shooting prowess, hitting two consecutive three-pointers to extend the Wildcats’ advantage to 58-45. Although Butler cut the deficit to 63-56 with Drayton Jones’ three-point play, a swift 8-0 run by Villanova quelled any comeback hopes.
In the closing moments, Villanova displayed poise, converting all eight of their free-throw attempts to secure the victory.
Butler initially found success, jumping out to a 14-5 lead early in the game, fueled by seven quick points from Bizjack. However, the Wildcats began closing the gap, going on a 7-0 run late in the first half that brought them within one point before Ajayi’s layup sent Butler into halftime with a slight edge.
Despite a commanding first-half performance from Bizjack, the Bulldogs’ inability to maintain their early momentum ultimately cost them the game. Villanova’s adjustments at halftime showcased their depth and ability to respond under pressure, reinforcing their position as a strong contender in the conference.
