Murder Suspect Shot Dead by Police After Attempted Attack During Hospital Transfer in Telangana

HYDERABAD, India — A man accused of fatally stabbing a police constable was shot dead by officers in Telangana on Monday during an altercation at a government hospital. The incident occurred after the suspect, identified as Shaik Riyaz, attempted to grab a firearm from an officer while seeking treatment.

According to preliminary reports, Riyaz, 24, was being treated at a hospital in Nizamabad after allegedly attacking the constable, Pramod, and a sub-inspector earlier in the week. Police Commissioner P Sai Chaitanya stated that during the disturbance, officers responded to what sounded like glass breaking and doors being smashed. When the police entered the ward, they found Riyaz causing mayhem. Chaitanya indicated that despite multiple warnings to drop the weapon, the suspect attempted to fire the pistol he had taken from an officer.

In response to the threat, a police officer fired at Riyaz, who collapsed from his injuries. The details of the police shooting are under investigation, with officials confirming that standard protocols are being followed in assessing the incident.

A poignant moment came as DGP B Shivadhar Reddy paid tribute to the fallen officer, emphasizing the police department’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the state. The family of Constable Pramod, who succumbed to his injuries after being stabbed in the chest, expressed relief over the death of the suspect. They continue to mourn the loss of their loved one, who they described as dedicated to serving the community.

Reddy announced several benefits for Pramod’s family, including an ex-gratia payment of 1 crore rupees, a government job for a family member, and a 300-square-foot plot of land. Such measures aim to provide some support to the grieving family as they navigate the aftermath of this tragedy.

The situation surrounding the attack has sparked discussions about police procedures when handling potentially dangerous suspects. While the police take pride in their role as protectors, accountability and appropriate measures during apprehensions remain essential topics of conversation within the community.

Riyaz had previously been apprehended in connection with a vehicle theft, indicating a history of criminal behavior. When being transported to the police station on October 17, he launched a violent attack on Officers Pramod and his colleague, inflicting serious injuries that ultimately led to Pramod’s death.

Amidst the turmoil, Riyaz’s family has accused law enforcement of using excessive force during their investigations, alleging that officers were aggressive in their pursuit of information regarding his whereabouts. This accusation highlights the contentious relationship between the community and police, underscoring a need for dialogue and reform in policing practices.

As this incident continues to unfold, the Telangana police face increased scrutiny and pressure to take steadfast action against crime while ensuring the safeguarding of community trust.
