ATLANTA, Ga. — A woman from Georgia has been handed a 50-year prison sentence following the tragic death of her toddler, who died from a fentanyl overdose. This sentence, announced by the Cobb County district attorney, highlights the alarming rise of substance abuse and its devastating impact on families.
The incident occurred on December 4, 2023, when two-year-old Jocelyn Romero III was found unresponsive. Authorities say Romero, the boy’s mother, reported that during playtime, he began acting strangely, waving his hands in front of his mouth as if he had consumed something noxious. After giving him water, she went to sleep, only to awaken later and discover he was not breathing, his lips noticeably blue.
When the child was rushed to the hospital, medical staff determined he had significant levels of fentanyl in his system, leading to a ruling of homicide for his death. Following this tragic event, both Romero and her boyfriend, Pablo Garcia, were arrested after investigations revealed their involvement in a substantial drug trafficking operation.
According to the district attorney, police uncovered a staggering cache of narcotics within the couple’s residence. At one point, authorities reported that Romero possessed more than 6,000 fentanyl pills, along with multiple kilograms of methamphetamine, all while keeping the drugs in close proximity to where her son slept. The report further indicated that Romero had brought her son to transactions involving the trafficking of illegal substances.
Romero pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, possession of fentanyl, and trafficking in both methamphetamine and fentanyl, as well as illegal use of communication facilities. In contrast, Garcia entered a guilty plea for trafficking offenses and also faced a significant sentence. He received a 60-year term, with 30 of those years required to be served in prison.
