NEW YORK, NY – After years of fear and uncertainty, the alleged Long Island Serial Killer, Rex Heuermann, was arrested in 2023 for a series of murders that shook the state of New York.
Heuermann, a 59-year-old New York City architect, faced charges for the murders of three women found dead near Gilgo Beach in Long Island, New York. This arrest brought a consortium of questions regarding his alleged involvement, as well as the role of his wife, Asa Ellerup, who was reportedly out of town during the time of the murders, according to investigators.
The manhunt for the Long Island Serial Killer began in 2010, after the discovery of skeletal remains in the brush by Ocean Parkway, a case that left New Yorkers on edge for years to come.
Investigators were able to arrest Heuermann after they recovered his DNA from a discarded pizza box and gleaned information from his Tinder and American Express accounts. In addition, Heuermann’s wife, Asa Ellerup, had her hair found on or near three victims, adding to the complexity of the case.
Despite her alleged involvement, Ellerup filed for divorce just days after discovering her husband’s alleged connection to the LISK case. However, it is important to note that while Ellerup’s involvement has been heavily scrutinized, she has not been suspected of any wrongdoing by law enforcement officials.
The arrest of Heuermann marked a major breakthrough in the case, shedding light on the heinous acts that had terrorized the Long Island community. Currently, Heuermann has been charged with three murders, but the investigation continues.
