Wolf Attack: Forest Department Neutralizes Predator Following Toddler’s Disappearance in Bahraich

Bahraich, India — Local authorities carried out a significant operation on Sunday to eliminate a female wolf that had abducted a 1.5-year-old girl from her home in the early morning hours. As of now, authorities have yet to locate the child, raising concerns and fears in the tight-knit community.

The unsettling incident occurred around dawn when the girl, identified as Shanvi, was resting on her family’s verandah in Kandouli village, situated along the Saryu River. While her parents were tending to livestock nearby, the wolf struck, seizing the child and fleeing towards nearby woods. Eyewitness accounts suggest a quick response from the family, who attempted to rescue Shanvi but were thwarted as the wolf vanished into the darkness.

Following the attack, local residents and forest officials launched an extensive search. Their efforts proved fruitless initially, but hours later, villagers spotted the wolf in a sugarcane field approximately four kilometers from the site of the abduction. The alarming sight prompted immediate action from sub-divisional magistrate Akhilesh Singh and forest ranger Omkar Yadav, alongside a specialized shooter.

Using drone technology to track the wolf’s movement, officials were able to corner the animal, which was subsequently shot and killed by the forest department’s marksman. This decisive action, however, didn’t quell the tension that has gripped local villages, with many residents now demanding increased forest patrols and stronger measures to control the rising number of wolf encounters.

Disturbingly, community members found remnants of human tissue and blood in the vicinity of the girl’s home during their search efforts. Such discoveries have compounded the trauma for the family, leaving the child’s mother in shock and her father overcome with grief.

In light of recent events, forest officials have ramped up surveillance and have urged families to keep young children indoors for safety. A local leader, along with approximately 100 residents, joined the search, expressing a collective need for action against the threat posed by wolves in the region.

According to the forest department, four wolves are linked to a series of recent attacks in the area, with two having been killed previously and one reportedly wounded. The search continues for the fourth animal, which may be the culprit behind the latest assault. Over the past month, wolves have reportedly killed six people and injured nearly 30 in similar incidents, marking a troubling uptick in wildlife attacks.

Local officials are also reflecting on a surge of wolf attacks reported in 2024, which saw nine children killed and over 25 injured across various villages. These past crises led to lengthy operations by the forest department aimed at capturing the predatory animals.

As community members grapple with fear and uncertainty, they have been advised to keep children and the elderly away from fields and forest edges while search efforts for both the missing child and any remaining wolves continue.
