Unsolved: Maine Woman’s Murder Still Haunts Community after 45 Years

Bowdoinham, Maine – The murder of Emily Chase, a beloved member of the community, remains unsolved after more than 45 years. Authorities are seeking new leads to potentially bring closure to this long-standing case.

Chase, a 90-year-old woman known for her baking and independence, met a tragic fate in her own home. Her life story includes running the Ram Island lighthouse in Boothbay Harbor with her first husband, before returning to Bowdoinham to raise her family.

Despite her advanced age, Chase was active and well-known in town. Tragically, she was living alone at the time of her murder.

On February 19, 1978, Chase was last seen retrieving her mail. The following day, her lifeless body was discovered inside her Bowdoinham residence. Autopsy reports from that time indicated that she had suffered a fractured skull and severe brain damage.

Years have passed, but justice has eluded Chase’s family and loved ones. In a heartbreaking plea for answers, her great granddaughter, Sue-Ellen Baxter, pondered the senselessness of the violent act, questioning why anyone would choose to harm a defenseless elderly woman.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to Emily Chase’s murder to come forward. Tips can be provided to the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit by calling (207) 624-7143 or 1-800-452-4664. Additionally, information can be submitted using the online tip form on their website.
