ATLANTA, Ga. — A routine speeding stop escalated into a deadly crash Monday after investigators said a driver fleeing Georgia State Patrol troopers lost control near an Interstate 20 exit and struck people gathered in a gas station parking lot.
Authorities identified the woman killed in the collision as 51-year-old Chatanna Ohiyesha Patterson. Troopers said Patterson was standing near a parked vehicle when the fleeing Hyundai Elantra crossed through the lot and slammed into the car beside her. Three others, including the suspected driver, suffered serious injuries in the wreck. Investigators said the crash happened during the afternoon rush hour in southwest Atlanta.
State patrol officials said the pursuit began after a trooper clocked the Hyundai traveling approximately 90 mph on Interstate 20 West, where the posted speed limit was 55 mph. Troopers said the driver, identified as Fre’shun Tyai White of Marietta, briefly slowed after emergency lights were activated before accelerating away. Authorities said White crossed several lanes of traffic while attempting to evade police and maneuvered on and off the interstate near Boulevard. Investigators reported that one trooper stopped following directly because of safety concerns before another trooper spotted the vehicle continuing to drive recklessly through traffic.
Moments later, the Hyundai exited toward Hill Street at what investigators described as a dangerously high speed. Police believe the driver lost control while navigating the ramp, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway and barrel into a nearby gas station property. The Hyundai struck a parked car before crashing deeper into the lot. Patterson suffered fatal injuries at the scene, according to authorities. Emergency responders rushed White, a passenger inside the Hyundai, and the driver of the parked vehicle to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials have not released details about the extent of their injuries or whether any surgeries were required following the crash.
Monday’s collision renewed attention on the risks tied to police pursuits in metro Atlanta, where several recent crashes involving fleeing drivers have resulted in deaths and serious injuries. Law enforcement agencies across Georgia have faced increased scrutiny over pursuit decisions as traffic volumes rise and more crashes occur on urban interstates. Public safety experts often note that suspects fleeing traffic stops can create unpredictable conditions for officers and motorists within seconds. In this case, investigators said the driver’s sudden lane changes and rapid exits created multiple near-collisions before the fatal impact occurred at the gas station.

The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is examining skid marks, vehicle damage, surveillance footage, and electronic vehicle data collected from the crash scene. Officials also are interviewing witnesses who were at the gas station and nearby businesses when the Hyundai entered the parking lot. No timeline has been released for when the investigation will conclude or when prosecutors may formally present the case in court.
