Driver Found Shot After SUV Smashes Into House

Police found Nathan Hubbard wounded inside a crashed Kia Sportage on Winton Avenue.

AKRON, Ohio — A 21-year-old Cleveland man died Saturday after police found him shot inside a vehicle that had crashed into a home on Winton Avenue in Akron, authorities said.

Nathan Hubbard was identified by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office after the shooting, which was reported at about 6:20 p.m. in the 1200 block of Winton Avenue. Akron police and EMS responded to the area and found a gray Kia Sportage against a residence.

Police said Hubbard was the driver and had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Officers gave first aid until paramedics arrived. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where he later died.

A woman whose home and car were struck said the crash and gunfire frightened people nearby. “It sounded like it was coming through my house,” Shanta’ said. She said the noise made her drop to the floor and described the moment as terrifying.

Authorities have not announced an arrest or named a suspect. Police have not released details about where the shots were fired, whether Hubbard was targeted or whether anyone else was inside the vehicle. The investigation remained active Monday.

The case adds another homicide investigation to Akron’s police workload during a holiday weekend. Officials have not released a full timeline beyond the emergency response, the crash and Hubbard’s death at the hospital.

Shanta’ said she did not see much before officers and medics arrived but was thinking of Hubbard’s relatives. “I’m praying for their family because that was horrible,” she said.

Police and the medical examiner’s office continued reviewing the fatal shooting Monday. No next court date or suspect information had been released.
