Tragic Deaths of Two Teens Spark Investigations at Naja Isabelle Group Home in Nunavut

CHESTERFIELD INLET, Nunavut – The Naja Isabelle group home in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, is currently undergoing multiple investigations after two young residents died in the hospital. The tragic incident has sparked concerns and raised questions about the quality of care provided at the facility.

According to Margaret Nakashuk, Nunavut’s minister of family services, three individuals were hospitalized as a result of “critical incidents” at the care home, and unfortunately, two of them passed away. Nakashuk expressed deep sadness over the deaths and emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incidents.

The Nunavut coroner’s office has confirmed the death of a 12-year-old in Nunavut, as well as the passing of a 19-year-old outside the territory. This has prompted the coroner’s office to initiate investigations and review the circumstances surrounding the deaths that occurred both within and outside of Nunavut’s jurisdiction.

Territorial officials are actively working to move the remaining patients out of the Naja Isabelle home, highlighting the urgency of ensuring the safety and well-being of the other residents. Additionally, the department has hired an external team to conduct a thorough investigation into the quality of care provided at the facility, aiming to identify any systemic issues or shortcomings.

In response to the incidents, the Nunavut government has also reached out to the Representative for Children and Youth and engaged an outside legal team to further investigate the matter. The involvement of multiple agencies and entities underscores the serious and complex nature of the situation, signifying a coordinated effort to address the concerns and seek justice for the affected individuals and their families.

The Naja Isabelle Home, which caters to children and adults under the age of 40 with specialized medical needs, is operated by the Pimakslirvik Corporation, under contract with Nunavut’s Department of Health and Social Services. The ownership structure of the Pimakslirvik Corporation, as majority-owned by the Chesterfield Inlet Development Corporation, underscores the need for accountability and transparency in the delivery of care and services to vulnerable individuals.

As the investigations continue and more details emerge, the focus remains on ascertaining the circumstances leading to the tragic incidents, addressing any systemic issues or deficiencies in the care home’s practices, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the remaining residents. The urgency and gravity of the situation underscore the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry, as well as proactive measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
