Tragedy Strikes Stockton: Chaos Erupts at Toddler’s Birthday Party, Leaving Three Children and One Adult Dead

STOCKTON, Calif. — A festive birthday celebration turned tragic over the weekend as gunfire erupted at a gathering in a banquet hall, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of three children and an adult. This mass shooting unfolded during a toddler’s birthday party attended by approximately 100 people, shocking the Stockton community and raising alarm over escalating violence.

Among the deceased were 8-year-old Maya Lupian and 14-year-old Amari Peterson. Both were at the party when the chaos ensued. San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow confirmed the casualties included another child, aged 9, and a 21-year-old male. Eleven individuals sustained injuries during the incident.

Maya, a third grader at Aspire APEX Academy, was described by her family as vibrant and full of life. In a heartfelt statement, they recalled her enthusiasm for dancing, singing, and karate. “Maya was the light in everyone’s life,” they wrote, mourning the loss of a child who had so much joy ahead of her.

A GoFundMe page has been established to support Maya’s family as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy. Donations have poured in from the community, emphasizing the heartbreak felt over the senseless violence that claimed the innocent girl’s life just weeks before her ninth birthday.

Amari Peterson was also celebrating at the birthday party alongside his parents and siblings. His mother, Kimberly Peterson, described him as the “glue to our family,” lamenting how quickly life can change. She recounted the desperate moments following the shooting, revealing that as she tried to reach him, Amari was struck in the chest by gunfire. His father, Patrick Peterson, performed CPR as they awaited medical assistance, but Amari succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

“He was just gasping for air, trying to breathe… I was just trying not to panic,” his father recalled. The eighth grader was characterized by his outgoing nature and athletic spirit, qualities his family will remember as they plan his funeral instead of his future education.

Witness Patrice Williams, who hosted the birthday party for her daughter, described the terrifying moment the shooting began while guests prepared to cut the cake. Initially mistaking the shots for popping balloons, she soon realized the deadly reality unfolding around her. As people hit the ground in panic, Williams expressed her disbelief over the violent intrusion at a celebration meant for children.

Emmanuel Lopez, another attendee who lost his 21-year-old brother, Susano Archuleta, in the shooting, spoke about the rapid chaos. He revealed that his 9-year-old daughter was also injured but survived the ordeal. Despite their grief, Lopez and other families affected have begun online fundraisers to assist with unexpected funeral costs and medical expenses.

Law enforcement officials are treating the incident as a targeted attack, though specific motivations remain unclear. Sheriff Withrow emphasized the need for community cooperation in identifying those responsible, urging anyone with information to come forward. The shocking nature of the shooting has spotlighted the growing concerns over gun violence, particularly affecting innocent bystanders.

As Stockton grapples with the aftermath of this tragedy, community leaders are calling for a collective stand against violence. The city, like many across the country, is facing rising crime rates, prompting discussions about safety and preventive measures to protect families from similar events in the future.
