TUCSON, Ariz. — A suspect is in custody following a violent incident at the Laos Transit Center that resulted in a hospital stay for a victim. The suspect, Godwin Bloomer-Igbokwe, 27, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault in connection with the attack, which authorities described as unprovoked.
The altercation unfolded around 11:30 a.m. on November 30, as police officers responded to reports of an aggravated assault at the transit facility. According to a complaint filed with the court, Bloomer-Igbokwe was in a restroom creating a disturbance when the victim entered the facility after arriving by bus.
As the victim opened the door to the bathroom, Bloomer-Igbokwe allegedly struck him twice in the head with a metal angle iron. The blow rendered the victim unconscious, and he fell to the floor. Witnesses reported seeing the suspect leave the bathroom shortly thereafter, proceeding south along Nogales Highway.
As another individual attempted to follow Bloomer-Igbokwe, he allegedly brandished a knife and threatened the second person, according to the complaint. The victim eventually regained consciousness and was located several blocks away from the assault scene, having lost a significant amount of blood. Emergency responders transported him to a local trauma center for treatment.
Investigators reported that a piece of what appeared to be the victim’s skull was found along the route he took from the incident site. Medical assessments later revealed that the victim had multiple skull fractures and brain bleeding.
The Tucson Police Department confirmed that there was no previous relationship between the suspect and the victim, indicating that the attack was unexpected and without provocation. Bloomer-Igbokwe’s bond has been set at $250,000 as he awaits further legal proceedings.
Community members expressed shock at the uncharacteristic nature of the violence at a location usually bustling with activity. Local officials are now reinforcing the need for safety measures in such public spaces to prevent future occurrences.
