SALT LAKE CITY — Traffic-related deaths in Utah have seen a welcome decline, with preliminary figures for 2025 indicating 264 fatalities, the lowest count in four years. This marks a decrease from 277 deaths recorded in 2024, suggesting a positive trend in road safety across the state.
The report, issued jointly by the Utah Department of Transportation and the Department of Public Safety, highlights significant challenges ahead, especially concerning specific vulnerable groups such as teenagers and motorcyclists. Program manager Shaunna Burbidge, who oversees the Zero Fatalities initiative, emphasized that while the overall numbers are improving, any loss of life is concerning. “These statistics remind us that our choices behind the wheel carry significant weight in saving lives,” she stated.
However, the data also spotlight troubling trends, particularly among younger drivers. Fatalities involving motorcyclists surged by 32% compared to the previous year. Additionally, the death toll among teen drivers nearly doubled, with 31 fatalities reported in 2025 compared to just 18 in 2024. Such stark increases serve as a grim reminder of the risks faced on the road.
The Department of Public Safety urges awareness regarding motorcyclist safety, stressing the need for visibility, appropriate protective gear, and adherence to speed limits. Inexperience, distractions, and risky driving behaviors are frequently linked to incidents involving young drivers, underscoring the need for education and prevention.
Sgt. Mike Alexander from the Utah Highway Patrol reiterated this sentiment, highlighting the importance of personal responsibility on the road. “Our decisions can have lifelong consequences, and these tragedies are often preventable,” he explained. He called on all drivers to prioritize safety by staying focused, sober, and ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is buckled up.
The state continues to push initiatives to further educate drivers and enhance road safety measures. Community engagement and awareness campaigns aim to reduce risky behaviors and improve overall awareness of road safety among motorists, particularly the youth.
