Oliver Lopez was killed during a late-night repossession attempt.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A Jacksonville woman faces a burglary charge after police said a dispute over a repossessed vehicle led to events before the shooting death of tow truck driver Oliver Lopez.
The charge against Rockelle Jones, 37, centers on what investigators say happened inside Lopez’s tow truck before gunfire broke out at Sanctuary Walk apartments. Police said the shooter remained unidentified after the arrest.
Lopez went to the East 21st Street apartment complex on May 26 to repossess Jones’ Jeep Compass, according to an arrest report. A witness was with him. The report said the vehicle had been located and attached to the tow lift when Jones walked up and demanded that the car be lowered.
Investigators said Jones entered the Jeep and turned it on after Lopez refused to stop the repossession. Lopez then entered the passenger side, shut off the engine and removed the keys. Police said Jones later entered Lopez’s tow truck and removed keys from its ignition while another person was inside.
The key dispute turned physical, according to the report. Jones and Lopez struggled until a bystander intervened and helped get the keys away from Jones. Police said the exact sequence between that struggle and the shooting remains unclear.
Earlier police information said Lopez was arguing with the vehicle owner when a man came outside and fired several shots. Lopez was hit and later died at a hospital. Police have not released a suspect description or said whether the shooter had a known relationship to Jones.
Lopez’s death drew grief from relatives and others in the towing industry. A family member called him hardworking, loving and devoted. A friend who also works in towing said repossession agents often face threats, long hours and tense confrontations while doing legal recovery work.
Jones was arrested May 27. Her burglary charge involves an occupied conveyance, according to the arrest report language cited in local coverage. Her arraignment is listed for June 26 in Duval County court records.
The homicide case remained active Friday, with no shooter publicly named. Jones’ court case is moving separately from the open investigation into who fired the shots that killed Lopez.
