Two Killed, Five Wounded As Gunmen Open Fire On Chicago Crowd

Seven people were shot after attackers approached a crowd on South Wood Street.

CHICAGO, Ill. — Chicago detectives were searching Friday for two gunmen accused of killing two men and wounding five other people in an overnight shooting in Back of the Yards, police said.

The attack unfolded about 12:26 a.m. in the 5100 block of South Wood Street. Police said a group was standing outside when two male suspects approached and fired into the crowd. The gunmen then ran from the area. No one was in custody Friday morning.

The two men who died were first taken to hospitals in critical condition. One had wounds to the head, chest and leg and was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The other was shot in the abdomen and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Authorities had not released their names.

The wounded victims included a 23-year-old woman shot in the head and listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. Police said a 54-year-old man was shot in the ankle and a 30-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and hand. Both were listed in fair condition.

Two other victims were reported in good condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center. A 32-year-old man was shot in the torso, and a 21-year-old man was shot in the back. Police had not said how many shots were fired or whether any weapons were recovered.

The investigation was assigned to Area One detectives. Officials had not announced charges, named suspects or released a detailed description of the attackers. The motive remained unknown, and police had not said whether the shooting was connected to any earlier conflict.

Cook County Crime Stoppers said a reward of up to $10,000 was available for information that helps lead to arrests. Paul Rutherford, the group’s executive director, said even small details could help investigators identify those responsible.

The case remained open Friday as police reviewed the scene, hospital reports and witness accounts. The next major step will be the release of victim identities by authorities and any suspect information from detectives.
