The predawn shooting sent three people to hospitals and shut down nearby streets.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — San Jose police investigated a downtown shooting Sunday that wounded three people near South First and East Reed streets, where witnesses reported gunfire near the City Center Motel shortly after a Porsche arrived.
The shooting happened about 2:20 a.m. in a corridor close to downtown lodging, apartments and Highway 280. Officers found three people at the scene with gunshot wounds and had them taken to hospitals. Police did not announce any arrests by Monday.
Witness accounts placed a Porsche near the motel before the gunfire. People nearby said they heard shots and saw two men run from the car. Kino Blume said the sound of tires first drew attention to the street, followed by the sight of a young man leaving the area as police were called.
Police have released few details about the victims. Each was shot at least once, officials said. Their names, ages and medical conditions were not made public. Investigators also had not said whether the shooting began inside a vehicle, outside the motel or somewhere else near the intersection.
The police response disrupted traffic for hours. South First Street was blocked in both directions from Pierce Avenue to Highway 280, and East Reed Street was closed from South First Street to South Third Street. The closure covered a central downtown stretch near the San Jose McEnery Convention Center.
Investigators were working to sort out the sequence of events, including the role of the Porsche and whether the people seen running were victims, suspects or witnesses. Police had not released a suspect description, a motive or information about a firearm.
The shooting followed other recent gun violence investigations in San Jose, including downtown incidents that have brought police to late-night gathering spots. Officials have not said whether Sunday’s case is connected to any earlier violence. As of Monday, the known facts remained limited to the time, location, three wounded victims and the ongoing search for whoever opened fire.
The investigation remained active Monday, June 1, as police reviewed evidence from the scene and sought more information about what happened before officers arrived.
