Video showed the personal watercraft erupt near Highway 105.
CONROE, Texas — A 17-year-old girl escaped major injury after a Sea-Doo exploded on Lake Conroe near Highway 105, throwing her into the air as people nearby rushed to help, according to reports and video from the scene.
The blast drew a fast response from local rescue crews and stunned people along the lakefront. The explosion happened in a busy area near the Highway 105 corridor, where restaurants, docks and boat traffic draw heavy crowds during warm weather. The cause was not immediately known.
Surveillance video showed the personal watercraft sitting near the dock before it suddenly erupted into flames. The force of the blast lifted the teen off the watercraft and sent smoke and debris into the air. Witnesses told KHOU the sound was like a bomb going off. The girl surfaced after the explosion and was helped by people nearby before emergency crews arrived.
Officials have not released the teen’s name. Early reports said she did not suffer major injuries, though the explosion left the watercraft badly burned. Firefighters worked to control the flames and secure the area as boaters and people on shore watched from a distance. It was not immediately clear whether fuel, a mechanical failure or another issue caused the blast.
The explosion came days after another personal watercraft fire was reported on Lake Conroe near the McDonald’s dock off Highway 105. That incident also brought a fire response and left at least one person injured. Authorities had not publicly linked the two events.
Investigators were expected to review the damaged Sea-Doo, witness accounts and video from nearby businesses. No charges or citations had been announced. The next official update is expected to depend on findings from fire and safety investigators.
