Family members said Veronica Lopez was trying to end a relationship before the shooting.
POMONA, Calif. — A deadly Pomona shooting that killed a young woman and her neighbor is being investigated after family members said the violence began as a domestic dispute.
Veronica Lopez, 24, and Robert Brady were found shot Thursday afternoon in the hallway of an apartment building on East Monterey Avenue, according to police and local reports. Officers arrived after calls of shots fired and found both victims wounded. Firefighters gave aid, but neither victim survived.
Lopez’s family said she had been in a relationship with Robert Galtman, 48, for about two years and had been trying to leave him. Her mother told local news that she believed Lopez was walking away when the violence happened. Her sister said relatives recognized Lopez’s car during live coverage of the later pursuit.
Brady, described by relatives and local reports as a father of two, was believed to have been shot while trying to intervene. Police have not released every detail of the hallway encounter, and it was not immediately clear whether Brady knew either person beyond being a neighbor.
After the shooting, authorities said Galtman fled in a black Kia sedan. CHP officers spotted the vehicle on the northbound 5 Freeway near Roxford Street. The pursuit continued for more than an hour through northern Los Angeles County before officers used spike strips and a PIT maneuver in Lancaster.
Galtman was taken into custody after getting out of the damaged car near 20th Street West and West Avenue K. Police said there was no known continuing threat to the public. He remained jailed with bail reported at $3.1 million and was scheduled for arraignment Tuesday, June 23.
The Pomona Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is leading the case. As of Saturday, the investigation remained active, with the next public milestone expected in court on June 23.
