The return moves a 14-year-old Burbank homicide case back into court.
BURBANK, Ill. — A man accused of killing his bride hours after their wedding has been returned from Mexico to Illinois, where he faces a first-degree murder case that began with a 2012 discovery in a suburban apartment.
Arnoldo Jimenez is accused in the death of Estrella Carrera, 26, whose body was found May 13, 2012, in her bathtub in Burbank. The case drew national attention after authorities said Carrera had been killed less than 48 hours after marrying Jimenez and was found in her wedding reception dress.
The FBI said Jimenez was brought back to the United States after being captured Jan. 30, 2025, in Monterrey, Mexico. “Thursday marks an important milestone,” the FBI Chicago office said after his return, adding that agents had brought back a former Most Wanted fugitive after years of searching.
Authorities said Carrera and Jimenez married May 11, 2012, at Chicago City Hall and later attended a reception. Investigators have said Carrera was stabbed more than 18 times in Jimenez’s black Maserati after the couple left the celebration. Her body was later found in her apartment in the 7800 block of South Rutherford Avenue.
Jimenez disappeared after the killing, authorities said. Cook County prosecutors charged him with first-degree murder, and federal authorities later charged him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. In 2019, the FBI placed him on its Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, making the case part of a national fugitive search.
His arrest in Mexico followed work by the FBI, Burbank police, Mexican law enforcement, Interpol and federal court officials in northern Illinois. At the time of his capture, officials said he was taken into custody without incident. The extradition process kept him in Mexico until his return to the Chicago area.
Officials have not publicly released a motive in the killing. The next phase of the case is expected to focus on court scheduling, evidence and pretrial proceedings tied to the 2012 murder charge. Jimenez has not been convicted in Carrera’s death.
Jimenez is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court Monday, June 22.
