Family friends say Jalil Jones was trying to help another child before the shooting.
CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Friends and neighbors are mourning 16-year-old Jalil Jones after police said he was shot and killed June 19 during a dispute on Mount Zion Road.
The case has drawn grief across the Jonesboro community and led to the arrest of Joshua Clinton, 16. Clayton County police said Clinton faces murder and other charges, while detectives continue to examine the shooting and a separate case they say happened afterward.
Jones was killed in the 800 block of Mount Zion Road, police said. Investigators said an ongoing dispute involving several people turned into gunfire. Officials have not released the full sequence of events, and they have not said how many people were at the scene. Lyniece Wilkes, a family friend and mentor, said Jones stepped in because a younger child was being bullied. “He was outside trying to help and protect a young boy who needed help at the time,” she said.
Police said Clinton was arrested with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. Jail charges include murder, aggravated assault, cruelty to children, reckless conduct, battery, tampering with evidence, discharging a firearm near a public roadway and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Detectives also obtained additional warrants after linking Clinton to another shooting that occurred after Jones was killed.
Wilkes described Jones as funny, bright and respected by people who knew him. She said he was moving toward a better path before his death, with a new job, plans to get a driver’s permit and school set to begin in August. “Jalil was all around bubbly,” Wilkes said. She said the loss has shaken people who watched him grow up.
A memorial near the shooting scene has become a place for the community to grieve. Flowers and tributes mark the spot where the teen was killed. Wilkes said she is trying to keep her attention on Jones, not the suspect. “As far as the suspect, I just try not to get my emotions involved in that,” she said.
Clayton County police said the investigation is not closed. Detectives are pursuing more leads and evaluating whether others were involved. Authorities have not announced a court date or said when more details may be released.
