Two Gunshots. A Silent Phone. A 73-Year-Old Now Faces Murder Charge

Court records say surveillance audio captured a slammed door and two gunshots.

TEXAS CITY, Texas — A concerning phone call led officers to a Texas City home Thursday, where they found 42-year-old Angela Gray dead from a gunshot wound, police said.

The call came just before 3 p.m. and sent officers to the 7200 block of Mallard Drive for a welfare concern. By the end of the response, police had opened a homicide investigation and arrested 73-year-old Lee Sims on a murder charge.

Investigators said the caller reported hearing Gray and Sims “getting into it” during the phone call. The caller then heard heavy breathing before Gray stopped communicating, police said. Officers later found Gray inside the home. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene.

Court documents say surveillance video from the home showed two people entering the garage. A door was heard slamming, followed by two gunshots. The records say Gray was found in the living room with a gunshot wound to the chest. Investigators said Sims was found with a concealed gun in his waistband.

Friends told investigators Gray and Sims had been dating and that Gray had recently moved into Sims’ home. Family and friends described Gray as a nurse at an assisted living facility and a mother of two. Police have not released a full account of what happened before the shooting.

Sims told a neighbor he shot Gray in self-defense, investigators said. Police have not said whether any additional physical evidence supports that claim. Records show Sims was licensed as a security officer until last year and had no Texas criminal history.

Sims remained jailed on a $250,000 bond as detectives continued the investigation. The case now centers on witness statements, surveillance evidence, the recovered gun and the final phone call before Gray was found dead.
