Infant Dies After Being Shot Inside St. Louis Home

A police spokesperson said investigators were not looking for any outside suspects.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — St. Louis detectives were investigating Saturday after a 7-month-old girl was shot and killed inside a Baden neighborhood home Friday afternoon, police said.

The shooting was reported shortly after 4 p.m. in the 8400 block of North Broadway. Officers arrived at the home, found the infant wounded and took her to a hospital in a police SUV. Police said she died at the hospital despite lifesaving efforts.

Police spokesperson Mitch McCoy said officers faced “the type of call that no officer ever wants to get.” He said the crime scene was limited to the home, where adults and juveniles were present at the time of the shooting.

Police said an officer rode with the child in the back seat and continued emergency care while other officers shut down streets to speed the trip to the hospital. Investigators later said they do not believe the baby fired the gun herself.

A firearm was recovered inside the home, police said. Homicide detectives and child abuse detectives were handling the investigation. Authorities had not announced an arrest or released the infant’s name by Saturday.

The death drew public concern because it followed another fatal shooting of a minor in St. Louis earlier in the week. Police said 26 juveniles had been shot in the city so far this year. Community advocates called for accountability after the child’s death.

Detectives were continuing to interview witnesses and review evidence from the home. Police said they did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the surrounding neighborhood.
