Teen Found Shot Dead in Colton Garage as Police Rule Out Suicide

Police have ruled out suicide but have not announced an arrest or motive.

COLTON, Calif. — The fatal shooting of 19-year-old Charlotte Gallegos Aragon inside a Colton home remains under investigation more than a week after officers found her wounded in a garage.

Colton police said officers responded at about 1:26 a.m. June 15 to the 1000 block of Silver Star Circle after reports of a shooting. Gallegos Aragon was found inside the garage with a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead by Colton Fire Department personnel.

The case has not been classified as a homicide, though police said suicide has been ruled out. Detectives have not named a suspect, announced a motive or said whether anyone has been detained. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Scientific Investigations Division is assisting Colton police with evidence work.

Friends and relatives described Gallegos Aragon as outgoing and full of life. She had recently graduated from Colton High School, played soccer and was working for Amazon. Cecilia Felix, whose son was dating Gallegos Aragon, said the young woman stood out for how she treated people. “She was a great person and very caring,” Felix said.

Felix said Gallegos Aragon lived in the home with her mother and another family. She said the shooting has left loved ones with unanswered questions about what happened inside the house that morning. Gallegos Aragon’s mother was at work when the shooting occurred, Felix said, and has been grieving while sharing photos and videos of her daughter.

Police have released few details about the moments before the shooting. Authorities have not said who called 911, whether witnesses have been interviewed or whether investigators recovered surveillance video from the neighborhood. The home sits in a residential area of Colton, a San Bernardino County city east of Los Angeles.

The investigation now centers on evidence gathered at the home, interviews and any records that could help detectives determine how Gallegos Aragon was shot. No court filings or charges had been announced as of June 24. Police have not scheduled a public briefing in the case.

Felix said the family wants accountability and clearer answers. “There was a lot more that was going on in this house,” she said. “I’m so angry that there’s no arrests.”

The case remained open June 24. Colton police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Isabel Jaramillo at 909-370-5142.
