Shooting Incident in Indiana Leaves House Cleaner Dead After Misaddressed Arrival

Whitestown, Indiana — A tragic incident unfolded on November 5 when a house cleaner was shot and killed after she mistakenly arrived at the wrong address while on a job. María Florinda Ríos Pérez de Velásquez, a mother of four, was fatally wounded on the front porch of a home in the quiet suburban community.

The Whitestown Metropolitan Police Department received a 911 call reporting a potential break-in at a residence. When officers arrived, they discovered Ríos Pérez de Velásquez suffering from a gunshot wound alongside her husband, Mauricio Velázquez. Initial investigations revealed that the couple was part of a cleaning crew and had inadvertently shown up at the wrong location for their scheduled job.

Family members shared that Ríos Pérez de Velásquez had immigrated from Guatemala with her husband several years earlier, seeking a better life in the United States. Her brother, Rudy Ríos Pérez, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating, “She was a hardworking mother who came here for her children.”

Authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the shooter but confirmed that two residents were inside the home at the time of the incident. Believing their home was being invaded, they promptly called emergency services. According to officials, one of the residents fired a shot from inside, tragically striking Ríos Pérez de Velásquez.

The Whitestown Police Department is actively investigating the case, working closely with the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office, as they seek to understand the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the actions of the residents.

Indiana’s self-defense laws, commonly known as “stand your ground” regulations, allow individuals to use reasonable force, including deadly force, when they perceive a threat. Under these laws, homeowners do not have a duty to retreat before using force against an intruder. This legal framework will likely play a significant role as the investigation unfolds.

As the community processes this heartbreaking event, the family is left to mourn the loss of a beloved mother and wife. Local residents expressed shock, emphasizing the need for awareness and understanding in similar situations, highlighting how easily such tragedies can occur due to misunderstandings.

Ríos Pérez de Velásquez’s death underscores the ongoing discussions surrounding gun safety and the complexities of self-defense laws. As the investigation continues, local leaders and residents alike are reflecting on the implications of this incident, hoping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
