Murder Charges Filed Against Kansas City Man Following Fatal CVS Shooting of Employee

North Kansas City, Mo. — A tragic shooting at a local CVS has led to murder charges against a 29-year-old man, following the death of a store employee. Authorities say Antonio Serrano of Kansas City was charged with first-degree murder and other offenses after Rusty Donovan, 42, was fatally wounded during the incident.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. According to court documents filed by the Clay County Prosecutor’s Office, police arrived shortly after 3 p.m. to find Donovan with multiple gunshot wounds and no signs of life behind the checkout counter.

Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing Serrano entering the store at 3:03 p.m., where he allegedly brandished a firearm and pointed it at a female employee before turning his weapon on Donovan. Investigators noted that after the shooting, Serrano roamed the store before instructing an employee to call 911, expressing his desire to surrender. He reportedly removed the magazine from his gun and placed it on the countertop.

In a subsequent interview with detectives, Serrano indicated that he had consumed a significant amount of alcohol earlier in the day and had prior encounters with Donovan. He mentioned he had visited the CVS a week prior to confront the victim over a text message. Serrano expressed remorse for taking Donovan’s life, claiming he was uncertain about his motives for the shooting.

Although he claimed he could have harmed more individuals, Serrano later asserted he had no intention of doing so. In a chilling admission, he suggested he could have targeted the responding officers if he had chosen to flee the scene.

Serrano’s criminal history includes a conviction for resisting arrest and fleeing from police in 2019. As the investigation continues, the North Kansas City community grapples with the aftermath of this incident, mourning the loss of a valued employee who served the neighborhood for many years.

The legal proceedings against Serrano are set to move forward as he awaits his next court appearance, where he will face serious charges that carry significant penalties if convicted.
