Schizophrenic Woman’s Shooting at Sells Gun Prompts Family’s Outcry for Preventative Measures

HOUSTON, TEXAS – The former mother-in-law of the woman accused of shooting at Lakewood Church, shared her concerns about the incident with ABC News, stating that she believes the shooting could have been prevented. Walli Carranza revealed details about her former daughter-in-law’s mental health issues, expressing her worries about the tragic turn of events at the church on Sunday.

Carranza’s former daughter-in-law, Genesse Moreno, has a history of mental health issues and schizophrenia and had a criminal record. When Carranza heard about the shooting at Lakewood Church, she immediately thought of Moreno, prompting her to seek assistance from the Houston police for a welfare check on her grandson. Tragically, her worst fears were confirmed when the police informed her that Moreno had been shot and killed by officers at the church, while her 7-year-old grandson, Sam, was critically injured.

The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation, and authorities are examining Moreno’s background to understand the circumstances that led to the tragic incident. Carranza expressed her disappointment with the lack of intervention and assistance from Joel Osteen’s church, where Moreno’s mother was a parishioner.

Carranza revealed that Moreno’s mental health deteriorated after she stopped taking her medication during pregnancy and that Child Protective Services had been involved in the case from the beginning. Despite being on the radar of government and law enforcement agencies, Carranza felt that the system had failed to provide the necessary support for her family. She recalled a terrifying incident in which her young grandson had accessed a gun from Moreno’s diaper bag, prompting her to take immediate action.

As Sam continues to fight for his life in the hospital, Carranza intends to provide him with comfort and support, emphasizing the importance of staying hopeful in the face of such a tragic situation. Despite the challenges, she remains committed to being there for her grandson and offering him the same love and care he received from her in the neonatal intensive care unit.
