Perry High School Principal Shot Multiple Times Protecting Students in Jan. 4 Shooting, and Remains in Critical Condition, Authorities Say

PERRY, Iowa – Perry High School’s principal showed immense bravery on Jan. 4 by attempting to shield students during a shooting that left several injured. The incident, which took place in Perry, Iowa, resulted in the tragic death of 11-year-old Ahmir Jolliff, who was identified by the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The DPS confirmed that Jolliff sustained three gunshot wounds from the shooter, 17-year-old high school student Dylan Butler, who later died by suicide. In addition to the young victim, Perry High School’s principal, two staff members, and four students were injured during the violent event that unfolded in the school cafeteria before classes began around 7:30 a.m.

Initially, authorities reported five injured individuals in addition to Jolliff, but this number has since been increased to seven, according to DPS’ Division of Criminal Investigation. Principal Dan Marburger remains in critical condition after succumbing to multiple gunshot wounds while two students also remain hospitalized. The others injured have been treated and released.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds addressed the community during a press conference on Jan. 4, expressing solidarity and grief for the Perry community, located about 40 miles northwest of Des Moines. Reynolds emphasized the need for answers and the prevention of similar tragedies.

As the community mourns, authorities are tirelessly working to review large volumes of digital and social media evidence related to the shooting. Once the investigation is complete, the Division of Criminal Investigation’s report will be handed over to the Dallas County Attorney’s Office for further action, if necessary.

This senseless act of violence has deeply shaken the residents of Iowa and prompted calls for decisive action to prevent future tragedies. As the investigation continues, the community remains in mourning for the victims of this heartbreaking event in Perry, Iowa.
