BEL AIR, MD – Six months after the tragic murder of 37-year-old mother Rachel Morin, authorities in Harford County, Maryland provided an update on the investigation. Morin’s body was found on a hiking trail after she failed to return from a run, prompting a widespread search in August 2023.
During the update, the Harford Sheriff’s Department released two new sketches of the suspect and shared a podcast in which Captain Andy Lane provided new details about the case. The investigation revealed that Morin was attacked on the Ma & Pa trail in Bel Air, Harford County, before being pulled into a drainage culvert where she lost her life.
Authorities also confirmed that witnesses saw Morin on the trail that day, leading them to believe the suspect was familiar with her routines. According to Lane, the suspect took advantage of a brief moment when Morin was out of view of others to carry out the violent attack.
The investigation into Morin’s murder took a significant turn when genetic material recovered at the scene was linked to another unsolved crime in Los Angeles. The suspect was seen in Ring camera footage leaving a residence in darkness, and the DNA evidence from a hat left at the scene matched the genetic material found at the crime scene in Maryland.
Lane revealed that the previous crime in Los Angeles was a violent attack on multiple people, including minor children, and the suspect did not live at the home where the incident occurred. Despite the progress in the investigation, Lane cautioned that it had been six months since the crime and the suspect could have changed their appearance.
In the months following Morin’s murder, authorities have received over 1,000 tips from across the country, indicating the widespread impact of her case. The release of the new sketches aims to generate further leads and aid in the identification of the suspect.
