Migrant Suspects Arrested for Assault on NYPD Officers at Manhattan Shelter

NEW YORK, NY – Two additional suspects have been apprehended in the assault of an NYPD lieutenant and officer outside a Manhattan migrant shelter, as revealed by the police on Thursday.

Yohenry Brito, 24, and Jandry Barros, 21, both migrants, were taken into custody on Wednesday night for robbery and felony assault.

The NYPD released surveillance video showing the attack, which occurred outside the Candler Building on W. 42nd St. near Seventh Ave. The footage depicts the officers attempting to arrest a man in a yellow jacket before being ambushed by multiple individuals.

Both officers sustained injuries in the attack, with scratches, bumps, and bruises, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

In total, 12 men are believed to have been involved in the assault, with five still being sought by the police. Five individuals, including Yorman Reveron, 24, Darwin Andres Gomez-Izquiel, 19, Wilson Juarez, 21, and Kelvin Servita Arocha, 19, had previously been arrested.

All five are facing charges including assault on a police officer, gang assault, or attempted assault. Four of the suspects were released without bail after their arraignment, while a fifth, Jhoan Boada, 22, was also released following his arraignment, despite the police’s allegations.

Brito and Barros were scheduled for arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court on Thursday, with Brito having a history of prior arrests for petty larceny and robbery, and Barros facing a pending case in Queens Criminal Court. Concerns were raised by NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell with regards to the suspects being released without consequences, emphasizing the need for change to address the issue of assaults on police officers.
