Man Who Shot Task Force Officer in Trotwood Identified after Self-Inflicted Death

TROTWOOD, OHIO – Authorities have identified the man who died after allegedly shooting a task force officer in Trotwood last week. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office named the deceased as 23-year-old Leo Lucas on Monday.

As previously reported by News Center 7, Lucas was discovered dead inside an apartment following an extended standoff on Bellcreek Lane and Springmeadow Lane. Officials indicated that Lucas appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although the exact cause and manner of death are still pending investigation by the coroner’s office.

The U.S. Marshals Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) was collaborating with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office to execute a warrant for felonious assault at the apartment complex. It was during this operation that Lucas allegedly opened fire, injuring one of the task force officers in the leg.

According to U.S. Marshal Michael Black, the wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Initial reports suggested that no law enforcement officers returned fire during the incident. However, footage captured by cameras showed members of the SWAT team deploying concussion grenades and distraction devices into the apartment.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting and subsequent standoff are currently under investigation, with authorities working to unravel the chain of events leading to Lucas’s death. Further details may emerge as the investigation unfolds.
