Baby Left Blind After Father Allegedly Kicked Him in Head

Keontae Austin remains jailed in Greenville County while the child abuse case awaits trial.

GREENVILLE, S.C. — A Greenville County mother says her toddler faces lifelong medical challenges after deputies said the child’s father kicked him in the head as an infant, causing a traumatic brain injury.

Autumn Miera said her son, Khosen, was 5 weeks old when he was badly hurt. He is now 1 and blind in both eyes, she said. His father, Keontae Austin, has been jailed for more than a year on a charge of child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.

The case began when Miera said she left home to run errands and Austin called her about the baby crying. She said she returned to find Khosen bleeding and unresponsive on a bed. Deputies said Austin later admitted kicking the baby in the head. Khosen was taken for emergency care and spent more than a month in the NICU.

Miera said the child suffered a brain injury and eye hemorrhaging. She said doctors did not expect him to survive the first 24 hours. “The homicide unit was there the night it happened to Khosen,” Miera said, adding that she believed the charge should have been more severe. Authorities have not publicly announced a trial date or new charges.

Court records show Austin asked to be released from jail while the case is pending. A judge denied his bond requests, and he remains in custody in Greenville County. The charge against him has not yet been decided by a jury, and the public court record does not show a scheduled trial date.

The case now turns on the court process and Khosen’s continued recovery. Miera said her son’s injuries have changed his life permanently. The next major step is the setting of a trial date or another court hearing in Austin’s case.

As of June 20, Austin remains jailed, Khosen remains in his mother’s care, and the family is waiting for the criminal case to move forward.
