Investigators say Daryl Alexander Hill stopped to break up a confrontation before he was shot, while the accused man remains jailed.
APOPKA, Fla. — A 26-year-old man faces a second-degree murder charge after investigators said a bystander who stopped to help following an Apopka traffic crash was shot and killed during a confrontation Tuesday morning.
Raul Lionel Vazquez was arrested after the death of Daryl Alexander Hill, 56, near Plymouth Sorrento and West Ponkan roads, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the deadly encounter grew out of a fight between Vazquez and a woman that began inside a vehicle, continued after a crash and drew Hill into the scene when he attempted to intervene.
Deputies were called to the intersection shortly before 8:30 a.m. after 911 callers reported a man and woman physically fighting inside a vehicle. According to investigators, the vehicle crashed and the two people got out but continued the confrontation. The sheriff’s office has not publicly released a full account of what caused the dispute.
Arrest-document details reported by WFTV say Vazquez and the woman had been traveling in a pickup truck when it crashed into a black SUV. Hill then arrived on a bicycle and stepped in as the confrontation continued. Two witnesses told deputies that Hill later tried to move away while calling for help, according to the station’s account of the documents.
Investigators believe Vazquez shot Hill during the encounter. Hill was taken to a hospital, where he died. The sheriff’s office later identified him publicly and said he had been trying to help someone who appeared to be in distress. Authorities arrested Vazquez and booked him into the Orange County Jail.
The second-degree murder charge remains an allegation. Prosecutors must prove any criminal charge in court, and the publicly available reporting reviewed Wednesday did not establish that Vazquez had entered a plea. WFTV reported that investigators said Vazquez’s account of the incident differed from witness statements, but authorities have not released a complete transcript of his account.
The confrontation also unfolded at a busy time for the surrounding community. Orange County schools were beginning their first day of classes, and families were driving through the area when the shooting occurred. A father interviewed by WKMG said he was taking his wife and children to school when they encountered a traffic backup near the intersection and then heard a loud bang.
Authorities said the people involved remained at the scene, allowing homicide investigators to begin interviewing witnesses and examining the damaged vehicles. Local television footage showed investigators working around the intersection after the shooting. Police have not announced that anyone other than Vazquez faces a criminal charge connected with Hill’s death.
FOX 35 Orlando reported that court records showed Vazquez had been out on bond in a separate 2025 case. That earlier history is separate from the new murder allegation and does not establish guilt in the Aug. 11 shooting. The new case will proceed independently through the Orange County court system.
Hill’s death has also brought attention to the reason he became involved in the confrontation. His wife, Suzanne Hill, told WESH 2 News that the couple had been married for 17 years and remembered him as a warm, protective person who liked making others laugh. The sheriff’s office similarly described his final actions as an attempt to assist someone in distress.
Vazquez was expected to appear before a judge Wednesday following his booking, according to WFTV. No verified result of that appearance was available in the reporting reviewed for this update. Detectives continue investigating the events leading to the crash, confrontation and fatal shooting.
