Support resources are being made available as students return to school following the deaths of five 17-year-old boys.
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — A western Colorado community is confronting the deaths of five 17-year-old boys in a weekend car crash as schools reopen and local agencies make support available to students, families and others affected by the loss.
All five teenagers were from Grand Junction and died after their vehicle left Lookout Lane late Saturday, Aug. 8, and traveled down a steep hillside, authorities said. The wreckage was reported Sunday morning, and first responders found all five occupants dead. The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said it will not publicly release their names because they were minors.
The deaths came just before the start of classes Tuesday for Mesa County Valley School District students. The district said resources would be available for students and staff as the school community returned. Authorities have not publicly identified which schools the teenagers attended, and officials have not released additional personal information about them.
The Grand Junction Police Department also pointed community members toward its Victim Services Unit and other professional support resources. The department acknowledged that the deaths could have a broad effect on relatives, friends, classmates and others across a community where first responders and residents may have personal connections to those involved.
The scale of the loss became clear after emergency crews reached the crash site Sunday. Dispatchers received a report at about 7:45 a.m. of a vehicle that appeared to have gone over the edge of a cliff. Police and firefighters responded and found the car down the hillside. Mesa County Search and Rescue and the county coroner’s office joined the recovery effort.
Authorities said the vehicle had been traveling south on Lookout Lane when it left the road and descended the steep incline. The crash occurred during the late hours of Saturday, according to investigators, although police have not released an exact time. The discovery the following morning brought multiple public-safety agencies to the residential area in Orchard Mesa, south of central Grand Junction.
The coroner’s office later confirmed that every occupant was a 17-year-old boy from Grand Junction. Three were wearing seat belts, including the driver and front-seat passenger. Two were not wearing seat belts and were ejected. Autopsies determined that all five deaths resulted from injuries sustained in the crash.
Police are examining whether speed contributed to the vehicle leaving the road. That remains an investigative question rather than a final finding. Authorities have not announced a confirmed cause or released evidence establishing the vehicle’s speed, and they have not identified another vehicle as being involved.
The investigation and the community response are continuing at the same time. While police work to establish what happened on Lookout Lane, schools and local support services are dealing with the immediate impact of five teenage deaths just as students return to classrooms after summer break.
Grand Junction police said the crash investigation remains open and that no further information was available in the latest public update. The teenagers’ identities are expected to remain private under the coroner’s policy concerning minors, leaving authorities to focus public updates on the investigation and resources for those affected.
