Police are seeking two masked gunmen after a woman was wounded in Throggs Neck, where shootings have declined this year.
NEW YORK — A woman was recovering Wednesday after being shot multiple times outside a Throggs Neck home, an unresolved attack that came as police figures show fewer shooting victims and homicides in the Bronx neighborhood’s precinct this year.
The 34-year-old woman was wounded shortly before 10:10 p.m. Monday after pulling into a driveway on Hollywood Avenue, police said. Her 15-year-old son had stepped out to open a gate and warned her to look out before gunfire struck the vehicle. She was hit in the left arm and buttocks and taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where she was expected to survive.
Police were searching for two masked gunmen who fled south on Hollywood Avenue in a gray SUV, possibly a Kia. Authorities said one of the men wore a black Nike sweatshirt. No arrests had been announced, and investigators had not determined why the woman was shot.
The attack stands against a broader decline in serious violence reported in the 45th Precinct, which covers Throggs Neck and other eastern Bronx neighborhoods. Before the latest shooting was counted, the precinct had recorded four shooting victims this year, compared with nine at the same point last year, according to figures cited by police.
The precinct had also recorded one homicide this year, compared with six by the same point last year. Those figures describe overall trends in the precinct and do not resolve the circumstances of Monday night’s shooting, which remained under investigation.
Detectives had not said whether the woman was deliberately targeted or whether she knew the assailants. Police also had not released a suspected motive. Those unanswered questions remained central to the investigation as officers searched for the SUV and the two masked men.
News 12 reported that officers responding to the shooting found the woman outside 507 Hollywood Ave. and that video from the area showed police tape around the property. Neighbors said the vehicle appeared to have several bullet holes, though police had not publicly confirmed that observation.
The case illustrates how a single violent incident can remain a significant neighborhood concern even while broader crime totals move downward. Police statistics can show the frequency of reported violence over time, but they do not establish why an individual attack occurred or whether it was random or targeted.
As of Wednesday, authorities had announced no arrests in the Hollywood Avenue shooting. The woman’s condition was stable, and detectives continued working to identify the gunmen and determine a motive.
