Haldwani Communal Violence: District Magistrate Condemns ‘Pre-Planned and Unprovoked’ Attack on Muslim Prayer House, Releases New Death Toll

Haldwani, India – Communal violence erupted in Haldwani, India, as Nainital district magistrate Vandana Singh stated that the violence was “pre-planned and unprovoked.” The unrest began after the demolition of an “illegally built” madrasa in Banbhoolpura. Singh reported that the attackers had gathered stones on rooftops in preparation for the assault.

During the demolition, 15-20 individuals allegedly incited the crowd, leading to the violent outbreak. The district magistrate emphasized that the demolition process was carried out peacefully, with no intention to cause harm to life or property. However, within just half an hour, a large mob attacked the municipal cooperation team, escalating the situation.

The violence was characterized by the use of petrol bombs, gunfire at the police station, and setting vehicles on fire. Singh emphasized that the mob’s actions were not aimed at saving the structure but instead targeted the state machinery and symbols of the state.

As a result of the violence, the death toll was revised to two, down from the initial three to four. Four individuals have been arrested in connection to the incident, and three FIRs have been registered. The police have also identified over two dozen individuals who instigated the violence.

The demolition of the madrasa led to massive communal tensions in the area, prompting the imposition of a curfew and a ‘shoot-at-sight’ order against rioters. Additionally, at least 100 people were injured in the violence.

The situation in Haldwani remains tense as authorities continue to grapple with the aftermath of the violent outbreak. The district administration’s efforts to restore order and address the underlying issues of communal tension are of utmost importance in the days ahead.
