MARSHALL, Texas — The community is reeling from the tragic loss of Carlos Dewayne Hill, a 48-year-old man whose life was cut short by gun violence. His family is now raising their voices to seek justice and answers following his death, which they describe as senseless.
Hill’s mother, Alene White, remembered him as someone who could light up a room with his humor and joy. “Carlos had a heart,” she said, reflecting on his love for music and the people around him. Family members shared that Hill was cherished and highly respected, leaving behind a void that will not easily be filled.
“He was loved, respected, and brought joy to our lives,” said Frank White, Hill’s stepfather. The family’s bond was evident as they shared cherished memories and noted Hill’s presence at a recent family reunion, which brought together 219 relatives. “We are such a tight-knit family,” remarked Reatha Robinson, Hill’s aunt.
Marshall police are actively investigating Hill’s death as a homicide following an incident that occurred Sunday night in the 1900 block of Bean Street. Detectives reported that Hill was shot around 9 p.m., prompting urgent calls for witnesses to come forward.
Expressing deep sadness, Robinson emphasized the need to end gun violence within the community. “I pray that gun violence stops and that people learn to get along,” she said, wishing for a safer environment for everyone.
The family seeks to honor Hill’s memory by advocating for awareness surrounding gun violence and by extending compassion, even towards the alleged perpetrator. “We are praying for that family,” White said, recognizing that anger and retribution do not belong to them.
They are determined to keep Hill’s spirit alive through remembrance and unity. “We will move ahead by staying together as a family, remembering the good times we had with Carlos,” White added.
As the investigation continues, the suspect responsible for Hill’s death reportedly fled the scene before law enforcement could arrive. Marshall Police Chief Carruth expressed condolences to Hill’s family and reassured them that detectives are diligently working to apprehend the individual responsible.
Authorities are encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident to reach out to the Marshall Police Department at (903) 935-4575. The family hopes that by coming together and sharing their story, they can help foster a dialogue that might lead to change within their community.
