Nelson, New Zealand — A local man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison following a violent incident involving an intimate partner. Kole Stratford, who appeared via video link from custody, faced a court ruling for assault and drug charges stemming from two separate events that raised concerns about his history of violence and substance abuse.
The incident occurred in March 2022 when Stratford and the victim, both under the influence of drugs and alcohol, engaged in a heated argument at his residence. According to court documents, tensions escalated when the victim attempted to destroy a glass meth pipe belonging to Stratford. In response, he violently head-butted her. As the confrontation continued outside, he severely injured her by slamming her hand in a car door and later kicking her in the ribs while she was on the ground.
Following the assault, the victim sought refuge and contacted law enforcement, prompting police to find her hiding behind a vehicle in a nearby shed. Medical examination revealed she had sustained multiple injuries, including facial bruising and cuts to her body.
Crown prosecutor Sophie O’Donoghue asserted that Stratford’s claims of remorse were insincere. She emphasized that true remorse must begin with accountability, which Stratford failed to show by shifting blame to the victim. Judge Rielly echoed these sentiments, noting that there was a troubling inconsistency between Stratford’s earlier denials and his recent letters of apology, which appeared to lack genuine contrition.
Stratford’s legal troubles escalated further in August 2023 when he was arrested for possessing cannabis and ketamine while on bail, which violated prior conditions set by the court. A police search at the time revealed the drugs in a pill container in his possession.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Rielly discussed the severity of the assault, highlighting the vulnerability of the victim at that moment. She had initially considered granting Stratford an electronically monitored sentence, but ultimately determined he posed a continued risk of reoffending, especially given the nature of the initial crime and its repercussions.
Stratford’s time in custody will be accounted for as corrections authorities work out his release date. This case highlights ongoing issues within domestic violence scenarios and the challenges of addressing substance abuse among offenders. The victim expressed the lasting impact of the assault in her court statement, describing her feelings of living in “survival mode,” underscoring the broader societal implications of such violence.
