Houston, Texas – In a tragic case that shocked the community, the boyfriend of a toddler’s mother has pleaded guilty in connection to the death of 2-year-old Maliyah Bass. Maliyah’s body was discovered floating in a bayou more than three years ago, sparking an investigation that eventually led to the plea deal.
The incident began in August 2020, when an Amber Alert was issued for Maliyah. Her mother, Sahara Ervin, and her boyfriend, Travion Thompson, claimed the toddler went missing after being left at a playground while they were inside their apartment. However, a day later, Maliyah’s body was found in Brays Bayou by a jogger.
After law enforcement removed the body from the water, Thompson was captured on camera expressing frustration over social media backlash, claiming his innocence. Ervin, on the other hand, collapsed on the ground in grief at the scene.
Both Thompson and Ervin were arrested and faced charges related to the child’s death. Thompson, who was already on probation for a previous offense, was under scrutiny for violating the conditions of his probation due to Maliyah’s case.
Lacy Johnson, a representative from the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, stated their intention to present evidence such as autopsy reports, crime scene photos, and possibly testimony from Ervin during the trial. Despite Thompson’s confession to not protecting Maliyah and dumping her body down a storm drain, he ultimately pleaded guilty to both charges and received a 40-year prison sentence.
Following the sentencing, Maliyah’s grandmother expressed relief that justice was served, while Thompson expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see life outside of prison once again. Meanwhile, Ervin, who also pleaded guilty to the charges, is awaiting her sentencing.
