Fatally Shot Black Woman’s Autopsy Reveals Bullet Went Through Head

Springfield, Illinois – Sonya Massey, a Black woman, tragically lost her life after being fatally shot by an Illinois sheriff’s deputy in her own home. The autopsy report, released on Friday, revealed that Massey died from a gunshot wound that entered under her left eye and exited the back of her neck, passing through her head. In addition to the fatal gunshot wound, the autopsy also showed that Massey had minor blunt force injuries on her right leg. The findings were made public three weeks after Massey’s tragic killing on July 6.

The deputy responsible for shooting Massey, identified as Sean Grayson, was charged with first-degree murder following the incident. An investigation by the Illinois State Police’s use-of-force expert concluded that the shooting was not justified, as stated in court documents by prosecutor Mary Rodgers. Massey, a 36-year-old mother of two teenagers, was described by her family as someone who loved cooking, doing hair, and spending time with her children. At the time of the shooting, she was a slight 112 pounds and was wearing her nightgown and pajama pants.

The killing sparked widespread condemnation and grief among the Black community, leading to a large protest in Manhattan. According to a Washington Post database, more than 1,170 individuals have been killed by police in the past 12 months, with Black Americans being killed at more than twice the rate of White Americans. President Biden called for the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, a reform proposal named after George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis police in 2020.

Massey had called 911 from her Springfield home on July 6 to report a prowler when the deputies arrived around 12:50 a.m. The encounter escalated, leading to Grayson pulling out his gun and ultimately shooting Massey in the face. The body-camera footage released showed the tense moments leading up to the tragic event. Grayson allegedly threatened Massey before firing multiple shots, resulting in her death.

The devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the heightened fears Black Americans face regarding their safety in encounters with law enforcement. As the investigation into Massey’s killing continues, the community mourns the loss of another life at the hands of a first responder. The call for police reform and accountability grows louder as advocates seek justice for Sonya Massey and other victims of police violence.
