Charlotte, North Carolina – Four US Marshals were killed in a shootout in a residential neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident, which also left four law enforcement officers wounded, occurred during an attempt to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The suspect, armed with a high-powered rifle, opened fire on the officers as they approached the residence, resulting in a confrontation with law enforcement. In the ensuing firefight, one individual was shot and pronounced dead in the front yard. As officers responded to the scene to rescue their injured colleagues, a second shooter inside the home began firing at them.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings described the day as “absolutely tragic” for both the city of Charlotte and the law enforcement profession. He commended the officers for their bravery and dedication to keeping the community safe.
Following a three-hour standoff, law enforcement officers were able to clear the home and ensure the safety of the area. Two individuals, a woman, and a 17-year-old male, were found in the home and are being questioned in connection with the incident.
In addition to the four US Marshals who lost their lives, two officers from the state Department of Adult Correction were also killed during the shootout. Governor Roy Cooper offered his condolences to the families of the fallen officers and emphasized the sacrifice made by those who serve in law enforcement.
The tragic events unfolded in a normally quiet neighborhood, where residents were shocked by the intensity of the gunfire and police presence. Many roads were closed to allow ambulances quick access to hospitals, as injured officers and suspects were transported for treatment.
President Joe Biden was briefed on the shooting and expressed his support for the community to Mayor Vi Lyles. Senator Thom Tillis shared his prayers for the safety of all involved in the incident, acknowledging the bravery of law enforcement officers in the line of duty.
