Whitehaven, England — A house severely damaged by a gas explosion on New Year’s Eve may soon be demolished and reconstructed, pending approval from local authorities. The incident affected three terraced homes on Hugh Street, resulting in serious injuries to three individuals and displacing multiple families.
Optera, a firm specializing in structural repairs within the insurance industry, has submitted a proposal to Cumberland Council for a comprehensive renovation of 27 Hugh Street. According to planning documents, the three-bedroom residence had already undergone partial demolition for safety reasons. The new plans aim to completely rebuild the home to match its original structure.
In the days following the explosion, structural engineers from WDS conducted an inspection of the affected properties. Their report indicated that the blast, which originated from number 28, caused significant damage not only to the targeted property but also to its neighbors at numbers 27 and 29.
The engineers detailed the extent of the destruction, noting that the explosion blew off the roof of number 28 and caused the front wall to bow outward and partially collapse. All three homes experienced roof damage and extensive cracking as a direct result of the incident.
Following the assessment, crews were mobilized to safely demolish parts of numbers 27 and 28, with that work being completed in February. Local officials have been under pressure to address the safety concerns stemming from the explosion, as several families continue to cope with the aftermath.
The council’s upcoming decision on Optera’s plans will be crucial for the affected families, many of whom have been displaced for months. A successful reconstruction could provide critical relief to those impacted and restore a sense of normalcy to the neighborhood.
Community members have been closely monitoring the situation, hopeful for a swift resolution that will bring an end to the uncertainty lingering over their homes. As the council weighs its options, the future of both the damaged homes and the families they house remains in the balance.
