Detainers Filed Against Non-Citizen Suspects in Violent Attack Leaving Woman with Severed Hand in Georgia

LONG COUNTY, Ga. — A brutal altercation in a residential neighborhood has left a woman hospitalized in critical condition, highlighting ongoing concerns about violence and public safety in the area. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued detainers for two men, both non-citizens, charged in connection with the violent episode.

On Sunday night, deputies arrested Hector Esparza-Reyes and Jorge Esparza-Gress at a home on Meadow Road after responding to a report of a serious assault. Authorities allege the pair was involved in a dispute that escalated, resulting in the woman sustaining severe injuries from a long sword. There were also reports of a firearm present at the scene, although it was not discharged.

Long County Sheriff Craig Nobles confirmed that the victim, who has longstanding ties to the community, is fighting for her life and remains in critical condition. Investigators are working to clarify the relationships among those involved, with preliminary indications that the suspects may be family members.

The detainers issued by ICE mean that even if Esparza-Reyes and Esparza-Gress manage to post bond, they will remain in local custody. An ICE spokesperson noted that the men will not be transferred into federal custody until the criminal proceedings are concluded.

Authorities are taking precautions in their detention strategy; the two men are being held in separate facilities. While Sheriff Nobles did not elaborate on this arrangement, he did indicate it was a matter of significant concern.

As the investigation continues, law enforcement is seeking input from the public. Residents with knowledge or information about the incident are encouraged to contact the Long County Sheriff’s Office. The situation poses ongoing questions about community safety and the implications of violence within residential settings.
