Collinsville Man Fatally Shot in Home Invasion Attempt

Collinsville, Illinois – An attempted home invasion in Collinsville, Illinois took a tragic turn when a man was shot and killed by a homeowner on Tuesday night. Police responded to the 500 block of St. Louis Rd. around 6 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the lifeless body of 31-year-old Jonathan Gagen, who had allegedly tried to break into the residence.

According to investigators, Gagen, who did not know the homeowners, refused to leave after stepping onto the front porch. The resident, fearing for their safety, resorted to using a firearm when the suspect threatened violence. Despite being warned that he would be shot, Gagen proceeded to open the door, prompting the homeowner to fire a fatal shot at him.

Neighbors expressed shock and concern over the incident, highlighting the alarming reality of safety concerns within their community. Dwayne Tate, a resident in the area, conveyed his distress, stating, “It is a real tragedy out here. People can’t be safe inside their homes, let alone be on the street, you know, and going about their daily business. It’s just a horrible situation.”

Chris Meeks, another neighbor, echoed the sentiment of unease, emphasizing the uncertainty and potential danger that incidents like these bring to their neighborhood. The case has since been handed over to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office, citing a conflict of interest as one of the residents is employed by the Collinsville Police Department.
