Eruku, Nigeria — The Eruku community in Kwara State’s Ekiti Local Government Area experienced a horrific attack on Tuesday evening, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving various community members unaccounted for amid fears of abduction.
Witnesses reported that a group of heavily armed assailants invaded the area, firing indiscriminately and causing panic among residents, many of whom sought refuge in nearby forests. This sudden outbreak of violence has reignited fears over escalating insecurity in the region, prompting pleas for immediate intervention from federal authorities.
Community members indicated that local law enforcement and vigilantes have been trying to bolster security measures in recent weeks, yet the audacity of this attack has raised alarms. The Kwara State Police Command has acknowledged the incident, reporting that officers rushed to the scene after receiving alerts about the gunfire around 6 p.m. Police spokesperson SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi confirmed that the swift response forced the attackers to retreat into the bush.
Tragically, two victims were found at the scene, identified as Mr. Aderemi and Mr. Tunde Asaba Ajayi, with one discovered inside a church and the other in a nearby area. Additionally, a member of the local vigilante group, Segun Alaja, was injured and is currently receiving medical care at ECWA Hospital in Eruku.
Kwara State’s Police Commissioner, CP Adekimi Ojo, praised the quick actions of local security personnel and assured the public that ongoing efforts are in place to apprehend those responsible for this violent act.
