Atlanta, Ga. – An explosion at a Northside Atlanta apartment building late Tuesday sent one person to the hospital and damaged surrounding structures, prompting an investigation by the Atlanta Fire Department.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at the Northside Plaza Apartments, located at 445 Markham Street. Fortunately, the building was unoccupied and undergoing renovations at the time, which helped limit injuries. Battalion Chief Michael Roman of Atlanta Fire Rescue indicated that the lack of occupants likely prevented a more severe outcome.
One individual was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital with injuries sustained during the explosion. Authorities have reported that the man’s condition is stable.
Residents in nearby buildings reported damage, with shattered windows and debris scattered across the area. Deandrea Moore, a tenant in the vicinity, described a terrifying moment as she and her five children were asleep when the blast occurred. Following the explosion, Moore rushed her family to safety, quickly gathering her children and taking them to a nearby gas station.
“I had to get my kids, even though they weren’t dressed for the cold,” Moore recounted. “It was terrifying, and I just wanted them out of harm’s way.”
Earlier that day, Moore had noticed the smell of gas and contacted authorities. Although police investigated the report, they cleared her to return home. Later, reflecting on the incident, she expressed her concerns for her children’s safety.
As firefighters and investigators worked at the scene, residents were asked to avoid the area near Northside Drive and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW. The explosion not only impacted the immediate vicinity but also displaced approximately 40 individuals living nearby.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation, with fire officials working to determine the factors that led to the incident. As of early Wednesday, Moore was still unsure about the condition of her own apartment and expressed relief that her family was unharmed.
“I just focused on getting my kids out,” she said, lamenting the disruption caused by the explosion, but grateful for her family’s safety. Fire officials continue to gather information and assist displaced residents in the aftermath of the explosion.
