Berlin, Germany – A Berlin senator and former mayor of the German capital, Franziska Giffey, was recently attacked in a local library in a disturbing trend of assaults on German politicians. The incident, which left Giffey briefly hospitalized after being struck on the head and neck with a bag filled with hard contents, has sparked concerns about the safety of political figures in the country.
This attack on Giffey is part of a series of assaults targeting politicians and campaign workers, particularly in eastern Germany. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attacks as “outrageous and cowardly,” emphasizing that violence has no place in democratic discourse.
Notably, a lead Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate for the upcoming European elections, Matthias Ecke, was seriously injured in a separate attack in Dresden.
