Liverpool, England – A violent attack in a pub on Smithdown Road has led to a man being charged and sentenced to five and a half years in prison. The incident, which occurred in September 2023, involved 21-year-old dentistry student Shyun Patel being struck in the face by a bottle by a football fan named Mark Nolan. The attack left Patel with major injuries, including a fractured cheekbone and a serious wound on the top of his head, prompting a lasting impact on his life.
During the trial at Liverpool Crown Court, it was revealed that Nolan, along with his cousin Raymond Perry, were involved in a dangerous altercation with Patel and his group of friends at The Brookhouse pub. The confrontation stemmed from an incident where Perry was accused of inappropriately touching a female student who was part of Patel’s group. Despite Perry claiming it was a joke, the situation escalated when he punched the female student’s boyfriend, leading to Nolan striking Patel with a bottle.
Following the attack, Patel was rushed to the hospital for treatment of his injuries, including a broken cheek and a significant wound on his head. He now requires cosmetic surgery to address the facial scarring caused by the assault. In a statement read in court, Patel expressed the lasting impact the events had on him, outlining his fear and trauma from the incident.
Nolan, who had a history of prior convictions for various offenses, was found guilty of wounding with intent and sentenced to five and a half years in prison. Perry pleaded guilty to affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, receiving a suspended sentence and community service. Both men were also issued restraining orders as part of their sentencing.
The presiding judge, Robert Trevor-Jones, emphasized the severity of the attack and the irreversible impact it could have on Patel. He condemned the violence that erupted at the pub, highlighting the dangers of excessive drinking and the need for accountability in such situations. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the repercussions of violence in public spaces and the importance of ensuring justice for victims.
