Bidston, England — A tragic incident outside a local Tesco Extra store has led to the decision to destroy a dog involved in a violent attack. The bull terrier, named Nala, confronted a 13-year-old West Highland terrier, Buddy, leaving his owner and witnesses horrified.
On June 11, Terry and Maria Hunton stopped at the Bidston store while preparing to travel to Norwich for a family birthday celebration. While Maria went inside to shop, Terry remained outside with Buddy. The situation escalated when Nala was released from her owner’s restraint and quickly launched a brutal attack. The bull terrier bit Buddy on the head, provoking a desperate attempt by Terry to intervene.
“I instinctively jumped in to protect Buddy,” Terry recalled. “It felt like it went on forever – blood was pouring from Buddy’s head.” Terry sustained an injury to his leg during the chaos, as he struggled to separate the dogs.
Maria remained unaware of the unfolding drama until a fellow shopper alerted her to the situation. A nearby customer recorded the incident, capturing the frantic moments as Terry tried to shield Buddy from the bull terrier. Eventually, Nala’s owner managed to pull her away.
Callum Brown, Nala’s owner, was subsequently charged and appeared in court, where he received a suspended prison sentence of 17 weeks. He was also mandated to complete community service, includes 120 hours of unpaid work and 20 days of rehabilitation. In a further ruling, the court ordered the destruction of Nala, giving Brown 21 days to appeal.
Maria shared her mixed feelings about the court’s ruling. “It’s been a horrible experience,” she said. “While I’m sad that the dog is being put down, I recognize that it poses a danger. I shudder to think of what it could have done to a child.”
In the aftermath of the attack, a Tesco employee helped the Huntons transport Buddy to a nearby veterinary clinic. Initially, it seemed the terrier would recover, but his condition declined, leading to further treatment. On a follow-up visit, veterinarians found Buddy in a critical state and decided to conduct additional examinations. Tragically, he suffered a heart attack and died shortly after.
Terry expressed heartbreak over losing his companion of 13 years. “He was still so vibrant, and we believed he would pull through,” he remarked. The couple now keeps Buddy’s ashes at home, reflecting on the joy he brought into their lives.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of aggressive dog behavior, underscoring the need for responsible pet ownership and community awareness to prevent future tragedies.
